Dear Siena – 6 Months

IMG_0566
Happy six months to my happy girl! You’re really changing quickly now and becoming more alert, engaged and active than ever. This month was action packed, with our road trips to Big Bear, the Grand Canyon and Scottsdale, my return to work, your first days of daycare and your first Easter.
Your first Easter!
Your first Easter!
Your personality is really starting to shine and it’s pretty obvious that you are incredibly HAPPY! You show all your emotions on your face (just like me) and people are always commenting on how alert, engaged and happy you are. You’re incredibly active and rarely stop moving and are constantly rolling around, pushing off with your feet, squirming, kicking, flailing and grabbing everything and putting it in your mouth. On the surface not much has changed here since you’ve been doing all this for months, but all of your movements are more deliberate and smooth now.
Such a happy baby!
Such a happy baby!
As a result of you being insanely curious and getting so much better at handling things, we started to experiment with food a bit. I had planned to start sometime around 6 months but wasn’t sure when exactly I’d start. I wanted you give me clues that you were ready, and you did. After some research, recommendations and discussions, we decided to go with the Baby Led Weaning approach which means that we are giving you solid foods (mostly very soft at first) and allowing you to explore them on your own, rather than purees. We felt this method would work best for our family and so far it has been really fun! Your favorite so far seems to be banana, although you seem to have the easiest time with broccoli. We only give you food about 3-4 times a week at this point but will probably be increasing the frequency now that you’re 6 months and our schedule is becoming more predictable.
Broccoli is one of your favorites!
Broccoli is one of your favorites! (Most of the broccoli was demolished and on the ground by the time I took this photo)
You’re now able to sit unsupported for short periods of time (I think the most has been a minute or so?) and when you are supported, you seem a lot more comfortable in a sitting position. You still don’t have any teeth but after a really awful night of sleep recently (like back to the newborn days, it was bad!) we were convinced that the first two were coming in. But as of now, nothing to report in the teeth department. Your hair seems to be starting to grow, although you’ve still pretty much bald. Your eyes haven’t changed color much yet either, and are still mostly grey with a little blue but it’s hard to say exactly what color they are. We don’t know your weight or height since you haven’t had your 6 month doctor appointment yet, but you’re still in 3-6 months clothes and size 2 diapers. You’re a tiny, bald, toothless little human and seriously the cutest thing I’ve ever seen.

You’re laughing more now. The hardiest laugh session so far was when we were in Arizona visiting your dad’s friends and their three year old son JP was goofing around. You were laughing SO HARD. It made me so happy watching the pure joy in your face. You also discovered your tongue this month and went through a phase of sticking it out a lot (this happened during the Arizona trip which led to a pretty awesome Grand Canyon photo).

Best photo ever!
Best photo ever!

This month was a roller coaster when it came to sleep. Just when I was starting to grow impatient with the fact that you were still waking just once a night to nurse, we went on vacation and you started waking several times and I was begging for you old sleep habits back! Between vacation, a new schedule going back to day care, and possible teething, these last few weeks have not been restful for any of us. However,  in the last 5 days, you’ve slept through the night without waking (10-12 hours) every night!!! I really, really hope you keep this up!IMG_0506

It was really hard leaving you at day care for the first time. I’m definitely getting used to being back at work but I’m still not totally comfortable with the fact that we spend so much time apart every day. I’m not sure I ever will be to be honest! One day you’ll be at school all day, and then you’ll move away and it makes me sad to think that I’m not spending as much time as I can with you while you’re this small and still want to hang out with me all day! But, it’s life and I hope that I will be a good role model to you as a successful career woman once you understand what that means.
I love you so much!
I love you so much!

Love,

Mom

She’s so cute! Those teeth will come through soon enough — it seems like the first ones take forever, and it has to be so painful for them!

She is just perfect, Nicole. What a little beauty. Axel has started sitting as well and we are seeing more of his smiles and personality emerge each day. Right now we are in the market for a good high chair so we can start feeding him better (we are improvising right now, haha). What kind of high chair do you guys have and would you recommend it? Maybe someday Siena and Axel will meet!

Yes they must meet one day!!! I guess now I’m out for CIM. I have Bend on my list of places I want to vacation in the coming years so maybe then or another race. San Diego is really a great place to visit too! 🙂

The high chair is Graco 4 in one – http://amzn.to/1UZbP8b We like it! I don’t have anything to compare it to but it works! It’s pretty easy to clean.
