Why I Changed My Mind About Shakeology

is shakeology worth the money

I admit – I was skeptical of Shakeology for a long time. I bought it a few times back in 2011/2012 but never really drank it consistently. I didn’t research much about why it was so good for me. I did the Shakeology Cleanse and got burnt out on it (as would anyone drinking only a shake all day every day!). When I started coaching earlier this year, I didn’t buy Shakeology at first. I thought it was expensive and I’d do fine with out it.

However, I ended up buying a Challenge Pack (which is a Beachbody workout + Shakeology at a deep discount) and started drinking Shakeology. I’d take my Shakeology bag to work and drink it almost every day in the afternoon. Soon I started realizing that instead of heading over to the candy jar on my co-workers desk every afternoon at 3 p.m., I was getting a boost of energy and filling my body with something that was actually nutritious. Even then, I wasn’t 100% convinced it was worth the price tag. But after a few months of drinking it and continuing to lose the baby weight I’d put on despite an imperfect diet, feeling great in the afternoons and finally doing some research on what exactly all the “superfoods” in it were, I was hooked. Now my husband and I both drink Shakeology every day.

Shakeology for two!
Shakeology for two!

You all know that I only post about products I really believe in. I get many emails a week from people asking me to talk about their products on my blog and I don’t even consider most of them because I only want to present you guys with things that I truly enjoy myself. I haven’t talked a lot about Shakeology to this point because I didn’t want to present it to you without my 100% support!

Here are the reasons why I changed my mind about Shakeology and realized that the price tag is definitely worth it:

Shakeology is More Than Just a Protein Shake

shakeology ingredients why is shakeology so expensive
Siena loves it too!

I used to think that products like VegaOne or GNC brand protein shakes were an equivalent to Shakeology.  But, all shakes are not created equal—especially ones that contain superfoods. Shakeology is a very nutrient-dense shake that can be used for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. (Or, even a snack!) You’d have to eat a whole lot of fruits and vegetables to equal the nutrition in a single glass of Shakeology (in fact I do not take a multi-vitamin anymore because it has so many vitamins)—and you probably couldn’t do it for less than 170 calories. Shakeology makes it very easy to cut your calories without substantially cutting down your daily volume of nutrients needed. Truth be told, the majority of people are WAY MORE nutrient deficient, than they are protein deficient. So why just stop at a protein shake? Shakeology has over 70 vitamins and minerals packed into one glass of deliciousness.

Here’s just a list of the superfoods in Shakeology:

Acerola cherry

Acai

Amaranth

Ashwaganda leaf

Astragalus root

Barley grass

Bilberry fruit

Blueberry fruit

Brown rice

Camu camu fruit

Cacao

Chia seed

Chlorella

Coconut flower nectar

Cordyceps

Flax seed, sprouted

Gingko leaf

Goji berry

Green tea

Himalayan pink salt

Kamut grass

Konjac root

Luo han guo

Maca root

Maitake mushroom

MSM

Oat grass

Pomegranate fruit

Quinoa

Reishi mushroom

Rosehip fruit

Sacha inchi

Schisandra

Spinach

Spirulina

Stevia

Peas

Tulsi (holy basil leaf)

Wheatgrass

Whey protein isolate

Yacon root

Shakeology Does Not Contain Soy or Artificial Sweeteners

This one is huge. I try to avoid eating processed foods with added sugar, artificial sweeteners, soy or corn (of course I do eat things with these things in it at times but I wouldn’t want them in something I drink every day!). The reason why many shakes are able to claim “0 grams of sugar” is because they are using unhealthy artificial sweeteners to make it sweet. Shakeology has 6 grams of sugar and uses stevia as a sweetener.

Shakeology Tastes Great Even With Water

This is important to me. When I was working full time, I did not have access to a blender to make blended shakes every afternoon. But luckily Shakeology is incredibly delicious (and super thick) even with water. It’s even better blended up with additional flavors but it’s pretty amazing on its own. My favorite recipes are Chocolate Shakeology blended with 1 cup almond milk, 1/2 banana and a handful of spinach and Vanilla Shakeology blended with 1 cup almond milk, 2 tsp peanut butter and a half a banana (this tastes like a vanilla milk shake to me). I’ve tried nearly all the flavors and I’ll honestly say I don’t love the fruity ones (strawberry and vegan tropical). I prefer good ‘ol vanilla and chocolate (and chocolate is the only one I really like to drink with just water – vanilla is good for mixing). If you try  flavor and don’t love it, try another one! That’s what the sampler pack is for.

Shakeology Contains Whole Food Ingredients

Whenever it’s possible and sustainable for the formula, the superfoods in Shakeology are preserved in their whole-food state to retain maximum nutrient value. It’s a very difficult process to use whole, plant-based ingredients so that the formula retains as much nutritional value as possible, but Shakeology has a whole team of scientists whose mission is to maximize the nutrition in every ingredient in Shakeology. Imagine trying to juice all those superfoods! Shakeology is way less expensive and a huge time-saver.

Shakeology Makes Me Feel Good & Makes Me Eat a Healthier Diet

This is probably the most important of all! Shakeology makes me feel great! I don’t get that afternoon slump anymore – if I’m starting to crave something sweet, I drink my Shakeology and don’t reach for something else sweet to get me through the afternoon. It literally gives me a boost of energy thanks to these four ingredients (source):

  • Chia meal (seed): Supports energy endurance with omega-3 and -6 fats, protein, fiber, and essential trace minerals. It helps support high-energy endurance.
  •  Maca Powder (root): Known for its ability to help increase stamina and energy levels.
  • Holy Basil Powder (leaf): May act as a powerful promoter of energy and athletic performance.
  • Kamut Grass: Promotes high energy with protein, vitamins, and complex carbohydrates.

It is also great for digestive health, which definitely makes everyone feel better!

Now that I”m a believer, I encourage all of my challengers to drink Shakeology daily (the new My Challenge Tracker app allows you to track both your workouts and your Shakeology daily to keep you on track!). The most affordable way to drink Shakeology is to buy a Challenge Pack which includes a workout program and Shakeology – you save anywhere from $40-60 this way.

If you’d like to try Shakeology and see if you become a believer like me, there is a 7 day sampler available or you can simply purchase a 30 day supply with a 30 day bottom of the bag money back guarantee. If you’d like to chat more about a 21 Day Fix Challenge Group (see side bar for the next dates – my November one starts on the 7th!!!) or Shakeology, please email me at fitnessfataleblog @ gmail.com .

Have you ever been skeptical about a product and then fallen in love? Do you drink a shake?

I’ve tried Shakeology several times, each time hoping I’ll love it, and I DO! But sadly it does not seem to love me 🙁 It seems as though even though it uses Stevia, the amount of sugar causes my body some…ummm….digestive distress. Any suggestions?

Oh no! Have you tried different flavors? Did you try regular or vegan? Maybe that would help?
