Hi guys! As always I have a bunch of posts swirling around in my head but not a lot of time to actually get them together so for now, I want us to have a virtual coffee date. If you’ve been following me on Instagram stories at all, you’ll know that if we were to meet for coffee we’d meet at Philz in Encinitas (and then probably go for a walk afterward). It’s pretty much my favorite activity right now and is very baby friendly.
If we were having coffee right now, I’d tell you that…
I’m going to go for my first postpartum run on Thursday! I was cleared for exercise at four weeks postpartum but decided to wait until six weeks to try my first run. I’m hoping to make it down to the coast for something nice and flat. I’m sure it’ll be slow and likely pretty uncomfortable but it’ll be a start! I’ve been doing a ton of walking that I’ve really enjoyed but I’d be lying if I said I don’t look at the runners longingly!

I’m sick of feeding babies. And toddlers. Newborn life is demanding and with two it’s even more so! Although I’m not sure who is harder to please – the newborns or the picky toddler! But seriously, after nearly six weeks of feeding two babies every 2-4 hours around the clock, I’m ready for a break. I know I’ve got a long way to go, but at least I know they’ll start spreading out their feedings soon. I’ve also been giving breastfeeding a really solid effort in hopes of getting closer to being able to exclusively breastfeed, including lots of tandem feeding, back to back nursing sessions (one baby both sides, then other baby both sides), and pumping after a lot of feedings. Now that breastfeeding should be well established and I’ve accepted that exclusive breastfeeding is likely not going to happen for me, I’m going to scale back on the pumping and stress less about how many bottles they get vs. how much breastfeeding they do. As long as they’re getting some of my breastmilk and then benefits of nursing, I’m happy.

I’ve started race-dreaming. I’m mapping out my races for the next year, but still haven’t settled on any one in particular. I’m partially waiting to see how running feels on Thursday and also waiting to see if I can find a race that works with some friends’ schedules as well. Since I know the first few races back will simply be to finish, it’d be nice to have a buddy to do them with. Right now I’m considering the Balboa Park 8 Miler in August and potentially Rock n’ Roll Vegas or the Big Bear Half Marathon in the fall. Or maybe I’ll wait until January and do the Carlsbad Half Marathon. Not sure yet!
I’m one and a half weeks into healthy eating and feeling a lot better. A week ago Monday, Mike and I both decided to try to move our diets toward the healthier side of the spectrum (this also coincided with my latest challenge group and when I started working out again). I generally have a lot of balance in my diet, with about 80% of my food being healthy and 20% being not as healthy, but lately that ratio has fallen way down and I’ve been making more and more poor food choices. As of last Monday I have been eating more veggies, drinking less alcohol and eating less sugar. No particular eating plan yet (I’m waiting to go all in when I do 80 Day Obsession this summer) and I’m still drinking my coffee with my favorite creamer but I’m feeling SO much better already. I’ve been drinking my Shakeology every afternoon and eating the new BeachBars protein bars most evenings after dinner which has dramatically helped with my sweet cravings.

These newborn days are actually flying by and the nights aren’t THAT tough thanks to all the help we’re getting and the fact that they’re pretty good sleepers. The girls generally wake up only 1-2 times between 9/10 PM and 6/7 AM now (and I try to go back to sleep after the 6/7 am feeding for a bit) and I get a nap in about half the days. Mike is still off of work which helps a ton because he basically takes care of Siena and I take care of the girls.
One last thing – how is it almost June!?
What would you tell me over coffee? What races would you recommend in the fall or winter that are driving distance to San Diego?
You are an inspiration to women everywhere, Nicole! So impressed with you, love your IG stories!!!
You’re doing awesome!! So impressed! I’m doing my first race-cation with the family in October for the City to Sea half marathon on the Central Coast (SLO to Pismo Beach).
Racecation sounds wonderful!!! I’m possibly going to RnR LA and do an overnight girls trip out of it which will be nice. TBD!
Ok, first. I am completely obsessed with Philz! I’m from SF, so I was super happy when they came down south! Also, you are a super mom! Twins and a toddler! Very inspiring that you are working out already with that much on your plate.
Philz is the best!!! And thank you, I have a ton of help which is keeping me sane!
