Dear Scarlett and Rowan,
I’m not going to lie – this was a tough month! Our entire house was sick the majority of the month, battling two different colds that rotated through the house and you two were teething BAD! You also were going through the latest “leap” in development and I believe in the middle of the 8 month sleep regression. This has all resulted in our happy babies being much less happy and all of us getting a lot less sleep.

That being said, there was so much JOY, progress and happiness this month! You two are learning at crazy speeds and we fall more in love with you each day. Both of you are starting to practice standing independently and you’re both cruising on furniture, strengthening those legs to walk. You are exploring your environment non stop and don’t like to be in your playpen for long anymore. We try to read to you but you just want to eat the book or crawl all over us.
You want to get into everything and you often travel in a little pack of two as you explore the house. You can both hold your bottle and feed yourself now! You are getting better and better at self feeding. We are still doing Baby Led Weaning but we also use food pouches. You both get really excited when you see the pouch and if we only get one out, you’ll try to steal it out of the other’s hands.

Rowan, your favorite things are bath time (you love playing with the water as it comes out of the faucet), climbing the stairs, eating avocado, and playing peek-a-boo with your bib. You put absolutely everything in your mouth and it takes you a while to fall asleep at nap time. You aren’t scared of new people or places and are super tough – when you get bumped or hurt you barely cry. You babble but mostly just say “da da da da da” or “da!” “da!”

Scarlett, you love people and are very social, but you also experience separation anxiety and are often scared of strangers, particularly men. You love watching and playing with your big sister. You express your emotions very dramatically – both when you’re happy and when you’re sad. You cry very intensely and loudly when getting bumped or when you fall. You’re very vocal and say “mama” “dada” “uh-oh” and make a lot of other sounds. You will eat almost any food and don’t seem to have any preferences. You had 4 teeth come in this month! You weren’t very happy about it. You fall asleep easily at nap time. Your smiles light me up!
We ate out at a restaurant as a family for 5 for the first time this month (the power went out at our house and we were forced to) and it wasn’t as scary as we imagined, though everyone stared at us and several made comments about us having our hands full (which is typical for us, even when we go out with just you two).

You had your first Christmas this month and we had a great time spending time with all of your grandparents and my extended family over the course of the Christmas week. We also went away for our first family trip to the nearby mountains for two nights over New Year’s Eve with your Aunt Claire and Uncle Josh and cousins Molly and April.

Scarlett and Rowan, we love you SO much!!!
Love,
Mama
